WanderMania is here – at least for one day.
With 2022 Topps Baseball Series 1 officially coming out yesterday, all eyes were on Wander Franco’s newest cards. Whether you prescribe to the rule that these aren’t his rookie cards despite the RC logo, it doesn’t matter. Collectors, investors, hobbyists and everything in between are treating his 2022 Topps cards as though they are.
Yesterday’s FOMO sales — and asking prices — were crazy and were at an all-time sales volume, according to Card Ladder (which is an amazing tool and you should all check out).
Some of the notable sales on eBay include:
$12,042: 20-case player break for Franco – where there is no guarantee of getting anything good even if it is 20 cases;
$2,250: SSP image variation
$1,399.99: 1987 Topps Black Bordered Autographed redemption.
In all, seven single Franco cards from 2022 Topps sold for more than $1,000 at the time of this writing – with many more listed above that price.
No other card from Series 1 sold for $1,000 on the first day of release.
How long can WanderMania last? I don’t know, but these things have historically slowed down with many collectors choosing to wait to buy cards at a lower price point when enough time has passed.
Right now, Franco’s cards (eBay link), especially his newest ones, are at an all-time frenzy. The new baseball card season will do that people.
I’m not making any predictions on what could happen with Franco’s cards. There are a number of factors at play especially with how well he performs down the road and the MLB lockout, but his card prices did see a similar spike last year right around Opening Day and then again when he was called up in late June.
The Series 1 pop has offered yet another spike in his card values.
I’m ready to see where they go from here.
