Whenever big money is involved, inevitably seedy and shady individuals show up. It’s like they can’t help themselves and ruin the joy of this hobby for others.
That underbelly of the hobby was on full display recently. It started with Logan Paul’s Pokémon case revealed as being fake, then with some dudes from a breaker group I will not name allegedly reneging on a giveaway, to some people (maybe?) getting arrested at the Dallas Card Show, and then dozens of people allegedly being scammed by a popular sub-group grader.
It was one disaster after another.
What a horrible streak for the hobby.
I’d like to say it’s not the norm. But every card show has stories about thefts and Scammers are rampant on places like eBay and social media.
But I don’t want to paint everything as horrible because it’s not!
The hobby is filled with wonderful collectors. There are so many people willing to share and do nice things for others even if they never met them in person.
Don’t believe me? I went to Twitter and asked for a list of those who have done positive things in the hobby from the last couple of weeks and here is just a sample.
This was just one day, one sampling of good that is happening. I know it’s frustrating. I know some days you feel like selling off your collection. That’s OK. But I just want to say that you should remember there is good in the hobby.
The key is to enjoy what you collect.
