We’re in the heart of Spring Training and haven’t heard a peep about the Topps Now Road to Opening Day cards until now.
Usually, they show up much sooner, and since we hadn’t heard anything, I wondered if they would happen this year.
Late last week, Topps sent an email saying they would post them today at noon ET and they are LIVE.
Great news!
I’m a big fan of the RTOD cards. There are two things I love about them.
First, the bonus cards. Topps has offered bonus cards throughout the season for moments like three-home run games or no-hitters if you purchase a team set.
I’ve gotten the Yankees sets for myself and the Texas Rangers set for my husband. We’ve gotten fun bonus cards like Anthony Rizzo’s three-home run game (PC card!) or Ben Rice’s three-homer game.
It’s a cool way to memorialize special games and also get a limited card in the process.
However, my favorite thing about the RTOD set is the updated photography of athletes in their new uniforms for the first time.
There’s no photoshopping jerseys on guys.
Instead, we get to see Roki Sasaki in Dodger blue or Juan Soto in his brand-new Mets uniform. OK, I don’t love the Juan Soto one as much, but the point is you get to see him wearing his Mets uniform on a baseball card that wasn’t photoshopped.
Sure, it’s the Spring Training uniforms, but it still counts.
Spring Training photography also tends to be more fun than images from throughout the year. The players are looser, having a good time and are willing to take goofier or candid photos.
I’ll be picking up a Yankees team set again.
Are you getting any Topps Now Road to Opening Day sets?
