It happened nine years ago. I remember the moment Dan made his first phone call for an interview for a book he had been thinking about.
I’m not even sure that interview made the book.
But 400 interviews later with unbelievable and untold stories about Ken Caminiti, Dan’s biography on Caminiti is coming out. Playing Through the Pain hits bookstores on May 31.
If you don’t know Caminiti’s story, he was the 1996 National League MVP who was te subject of a Sports Illustrated cover story in 2002, discussing how he used steroids during his career. He blew up the sport with his admission. It led to congressional hearings and drug testing in baseball and was a major aspect of the Mitchell Report.
Ken sadly died in 2004 from a drug overdose in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx.
Caminiti’s story is so much more than all of that, though, even if it’s what people remember most. He was a layered and complicated man who was kind, generous, haunted and sad.
The book goes into great detail of his many stories from his early days, his time in the minors and his journey through the Majors.
I got the chance to read the book , and to say it was good is an understatement. It made me cry. It was so touching and emotional, filled with light and darkness.
I’m incredibly proud of Dan for the work he put into this book. I saw what it took over the last decade that he’s been researching, interviewing, writing, re-writing to get this story told.
You can buy the book anywhere books are sold. And you should.
